Paavan Aggarwal of Amity International School, Noida, won the third annual Spelling Bee competition sponsored by the US Embassy’s American Center in New Delhi.
The centre collaborated with Merriam-Webster, publisher of America’s best-selling English dictionary to find the best speller in North India.
Students from around 50 schools participated in this year’s Bee, which kicked off at St Columba’s School in New Delhi in November. The second round was held at Amity in Gurgaon while the third took place in Chandigarh in December.
The best spellers from each round met for the Final at the American Center where Paavan Aggarwal bagged the title of the spell bee. The runners up included Soumya Singh of G D Goenka World School, Gurgaon and Kiran Hans, a 9th standard student of Amity Internatioal School, Saket. They stood second and third respectively.
Anne Seshadri, director of the American Centre gave the reason for starting the competition in India. “We noticed that Indian-American’s were winning the US Spellbee. 8 of the 10 winners of US ‘Spellbee’ were Indian-American so we thought why not start it in India?”
The three finalists were presented with Dell Laptops while all the participants got a copy of the Webster dictionary.
