Noida: The depleting water table has become a serious concern across the globe yet the Noida Authority seems to be in a state of slumber. The rain water harvesting infrastructure is in shambles which is the need for raising the the underground level of water in Gautam Buddh Nagar district. The rain water harvesting plants, constructed a couple of years ago are either lying defunct or being used as garbage dump

Constructed in and around the six colossal parks of the city, these water harvesting plants are dying a slow death due to dearth of regular maintainance. The one situated at the Simla Park  in Sector 12 is a glaring example of official apathy. The plant is full of dead leaves, leaving no space for the water to seep in. “It has been like this for many years. Earlier, some of the active morning walkers took the initiative and cleaned all foliage to make it functional again but it has returned to the same poor state in the absence of maintenance”, said a morning walker, Hari Prasad Gupta.

The condition is no different with the other rain harvesting plants. The plant situated in E Block Park in Sector 27 is also in shambles. The locals claim that no cleanliness drives have been conducted since years. Similarly, the water harvesting plant in other sectors like C Block Park, Sector19 and in Sector 1 are also crying for attention. With monsoon around the corner it’s a pity that the authorities have made no efforts so far to overhaul the rain harvesting plants even though they are the most essential tools for conserving rain water.

The Deputy Director, Horticulture Division 1, Noida Authority Rajendra Singh, who is responsible for the maintenance these plants, said, “The meeting regarding the maintenance of the rain water harvesting plants is to be held on next Saturday, in which Deputy Chief Executive Officer will spell out the action plan for the maintenance of the plants”.

Denying the allegations that the palnts are not cleaned since years he said, “Every year we carry out the cleanliness drive for the plants but this year it got delayed as the officials were engaged in conducting plantation drives in various parts of the city. As we know that the water harvesting plants are very essential for maintaining the underground water level we continuously keep tab over the maintainance work of the harvesting plants”, added Singh.
